Build your Kingdom and try to have the most glorious one! In Kingdomino, the more connected plots of the same landscape you have, the more points you gain.
Kingdomino won the famous Spiel des Jahres award in See more See less. Discover Board Game Arena. Kingdomino is a tile drafting game in which players use domino-like landscape tiles to create the highest scoring kingdom.
The game consists of 1 starting 1x1 tile for each player, 48 1x2 dominoes ranked from with higher ranked dominoes tending to be more valuable , and 1 king meeple for each player 2 in the 2 player game used to indicate the dominoes drafted by each player for the next round.
Players will take turns drafting and placing dominoes into their kingdom. Players will be placing these dominoes into their kingdom in order to fill a 5x5 grid 7x7 in the 2 player Mighty Duel variant, see below.
Each square of a domino will be one of 6 landscape types: Wheat fields, grasslands, forests, lakes, swamps, or mines. Additionally, some squares on dominoes will feature crown icons on them.
At the end of the game, players will score each distinct contiguous region of dominoes of the same type, by multiplying the number of squares in that region by the number of crowns in that region.
Thus, a grasslands region consisting of 3 squares and having 2 crowns will be worth 6 points, while a wheat fields region of 6 squares but 0 crowns will be worth nothing.
Players add together the values of every region in their kingdom to determine their final score. Note: Each terrain type has a different distribution in the deck.
Grasslands and forest squares are plentiful, but have very few squares with crowns. Mines are rare but have lots of crowns. Press the "Dominoes list" button in game to see the breakdown of landscape squares in the game.
These rules are written for a standard 4 player game. At the beginning of the game, each player receives a 1x1 starting tile in their play area.
The turn order for the first turn is randomly determined. Beginning with the first player, each player places their king meeple on one of the 4 dominoes.
Each domino may only be claimed by one player. A new set of 4 dominoes are randomly drawn and placed to the right of the previous set of dominoes.
Then, starting with the player who claimed the lowest-ranked top domino in the previous turn, each player places their chosen domino into their kingdom, and places their king meeple onto one of the available dominoes from the new set.
Higher-ranked dominoes are more likely to have crowns or rare terrain types, but tend to give the players who choose them a later spot in the turn order on the next round.
When placing a domino into their kingdom, the placed domino can be rotated freely and placed in a horizontal or vertical orientation.
However, players must obey these two restrictions:. Dominoes must be placed so that at least one square of the domino is orthogonally adjacent to either another square of the same terrain type, or the starting tile.
The player's kingdom must fit within the constraints of a 5x5 grid or 7x7 in the Mighty Duel variant, see below. Players will take turns drafting these.
The reason this works is that due to sorting by number, the lower tiles in the column are better so it is all about weighing that decision.
Place your King Meeple next to the tile you want for the round. In a 3 player game, the unchosen tile is discarded and in a 2 player game each player chooses twice why you need the 2nd meeple.
Decide a random start player for the first turn. You can place your tile anywhere it works, but you can not go wider or higher than 5 units.
The castle is wild, so you can put anything next to it, but after that, the tile you have can only be added if it shares at least one terrain type of what it is touching.
If you cannot place the tile, it gets discarded. Players all choose again based on their order in the previous round. After this, they are flipped, to show their colourful landscape sides face up.
For the very first round, turn order is decided by one person taking those King meeples into their hands, shaking and drawing them out, one at a time.
This brings a nice element of randomisation into the start of each game and allows a tiny element of early strategy.
From this point onward, player turns will be dictated by the order in which the Kings have been placed. Each round the top meeple, who selected lowest numbered tile from the last round, will get the first choice of newly revealed tiles with the rest getting to choose in position order afterwards.
To be able to place a domino into your kingdom it has to be able to connect with at least one matching landscape square of an already placed domino, or be touching your square starter tile which functions as a landscape wildcard.
At the end of the game, you can gain bonus points for completing your Kingdom or for placing the castle tile in the center so you'll need to think carefully about placement, throwing tiles away can lose you the game.
This is where Kingdomino makes you think. As a clever balancing mechanic the lower numbered tiles enable you to have the first choice on the next turn, however, the highest numbered tiles are the ones that contain the crowns.
Remember I mentioned crowns earlier? As well as making turn order more interesting the crowns in Kingdomino also create an element of push your luck to the proceedings.
Scoring is calculated by tallying connected landscapes tiles of the same type and then multiplying them by how many crows are within this area.
Spend the game creating a wonderful grid of matching tiles but have no crowns as part of it? No points.
